Journalism Students and Information Consumption in the Era of Fake News

Technological platforms, such as social media, are disrupting traditional journalism, a result the access to high-quality information by citizens is facing important challenges, among which, disinformation and spread of fake news most relevant one. This study approaches how journalism students perceive assess this phenomenon. The descriptive exploratory research based on hybrid methodology: Two matrix surveys focus group professors (n = 6), experts in Multimedia Journalism. first survey 252), focused students’ perception news, second 300) aims at finding out type content they had received during recent confinement caused Covid-19 pandemic. Results show that prefer online media primary source instead media. Students consider politics main topic according respondents, mainly distributed adult users through networks. vast majority believe created for political interests quarter sample considers there strong ideological component behind strategies. Nonetheless, also reveals do not trust their ability distinguish between truthful false information. For reason, concludes, other aspects, promotion initiatives promote literacy decisive training university students.
